Calmares II ceiling lamp by Tom Strala

What is ugly?

Ugly is the illuminant of CALMARES. A light ring attached to a rectangular plastic – bulky and clumsy. It is the first energy-saving bulb with an electric control gear and usual bulb socket from 1983. CALMARES multiplies this misshaped energy-saving bulb 13 times and transforms this absurd circular shape into a charming light sculpture full of grace. Thus, our perspective on the single energy-saving bulbs is changed and our perceptions and sense of ugliness is transformed.
