Sideboard yakisugi
Sideboard in solid yakisugi wood. This object is part of our Alpine Heritage Collection.
Burnt wood, or yakisugi, is the result of a natural wood protection technique of Japanese origin, also called shou sugi ban. It consists of burning deeply the surface of a board to obtain a superficial carbon layer. The wooden boards thus transformed were used at the time as cladding for wooden houses. Shou sugi ban is still used today in Japan for traditional houses but also for modern and contemporary buildings.
